Brand New in the Strip: The Pennsylvania Market

This weekend, we officially welcome The Pennsylvania Market to the Strip District! Grand opening festivities, including a silent auction, live music, and guest demonstrations from a blacksmith, are open to the public this Saturday and Sunday, November 10 and 11. The Pennsylvania Market is a building and courtyard that occupies most of an entire block, with entrances on both 18th and 19th Streets. We took a look inside this long-awaited space to see what we can look forward to!

We talked to Owner Anthony DiCio and General Manager Bruno Leca, who were inspired to bring this new concept to Pittsburgh while working together in Portugal. While there, their favorite spot to visit after work was an outdoor market with highly specialized kiosks serving various foods and drinks. When they saw the Pennsylvania Building and courtyard in late 2015, they knew this was the spot to recreate the Portuguese market setting in Pittsburgh. Bruno says the rest of the concept evolved to complement the courtyard market, from the outdoors in.

On the first floor, you’ll find four retail spaces, which moved in first, in mid-2016. Courtyard Winery offers wine bottles and tastings of wine from their vineyard near Erie, Pennsylvania; The Olive Tap will have you replacing your entire stock of olive oil, vinegars, and salad dressings with their artisan versions; East End Brewing’s Taproom offers up to 12 locally brewed beers on draft; and Jonathan Moran Woodworks uses reclaimed and sustainably sourced wood to handcraft beautiful pieces for your home.

Outside, ten independently-run kiosks surround a large urban courtyard. There’s a full bar and coffee menu, pizza, tacos, artisan goods, and more. One of the booths is reserved for short stays by featured guests, so there’s always something new to discover. Seems like the perfect spot for enjoying a cocktail under the string lights!

Upstairs, the market opens up into a beautifully restored, spacious area. Five concept kitchens serve anything you could want from 11am to 10pm, with extended hours on weekends. Concepts include a specialty charcuterie space, bistro-style lunch and dinner, a pizzeria, small plates, and a cafe and bakery for brunch. There’s a full bar and 400 seats, making this one of the most spacious dining options in the Strip!

In the wine library, shelves of wines from all over the world surround comfortable leather chairs and couches. Bruno says the library name is key - he hopes this area will be an educational experience for guests, who can search for wines by region or by a wine index. A “librarian” is on staff to help guests learn more about their tastes and select the perfect wine match.

It’s a collaborative environment, and while all the vendors are independent, they work together to create a holistic experience for guests. Pizza is topped with meats from the charcuterie kitchen, the upstairs bar reserves a tap for one of East End Brewing’s beers, and custom wooden signs and other pieces by Jonathan Moran can be found all over the building.

Such a premium experience might be expected to come with a major price tag, but Anthony and Bruno want lots of people to enjoy the best food and wine they could find. Bottles from the hand-selected wine library average $25-40, and most plates from the five concept kitchens are just $10-15.

We hope you join us in welcoming the Pennsylvania Market to the neighborhood! Stop by for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drinks to discover this multi-faceted market within Pittsburgh’s historic market district. Bruno and Anthony want this space to feel “comfortable, casual, and alive,” and we think it delivers.
